A good way to progress with your design
is to
consider all the different stages involved: Get
a group of 1-6 likeminded friends together,
discuss your ideas and push your
brain into another dimension.
Collect inspirational resources
Images from videos, magazines,
comics and other designs on paper. (Create a mood board, brainstorm
etc &)
Collect Materials,
Use the materials as a starting point, an unusual shape may give
you inspiration or a new use for a material might be the basis of
your design.
Start from a Concept,
A concept is the central idea that inspires your design. Scientific
or environmental research, a song or a T.V. programme could inspire
the starting point of your design. |

Decide
on which type of costume your group
would like to make and gather inspiration.
Decide on who the model will be.
Ensure they will be comfortable to perform onstage. It is important
to choose early in order to get costume measurements and allow lots
of time for rehearsals. Just remember the model will have to perform
in the costume for 2 minutes!
Start collecting Materials. Take
a step back and start looking at everything as potential materials
for your costume.
Your house,
plastic containers, wrapping, old clothes, buttons, wool, cartons,
bottles, sponges, wire &
Your shed,
pots, lampshades, watering cans, hoses, brushes, old sports gear,
broken bicycles &
Local Factories,
plastic, foam, paper, metal, cardboard &
Local shops,
boxes, cartons, wire, mannequins &
Mechanical Garages, rubber
tyres, car parts, nuts and bolts &
Farms/Woods,
bark, straw, plants, twine, hession bags & &Or can you
think of really interesting unusual materials, or can you make something
ordinary be extraordinary?
Scrap yards,
you re bound to find something!
Start making the costume &the
sooner the better!! Lots of different techniques could be used to
construct the costume, weaving, batik, welding, wiring, knitting,
etc.
Team members could be responsible for certain parts of each costume &just
make sure it all "hangs together".
Add finishing touches or special effects.
Consider texture, details, colour, tone, moving parts, wheels, lights &consider
everything!
Bring it together with music.
Once the costume is nearly ready, start practising your performance &make
sure you model the costume to its full potential - choose something
that will show it off! Don't leave this until the last minute. You
should start thinking about the music when you are half way there.
(see performance tips on the noticeboard).
Drawings, sketches,
magazine cuttings, textiles, artistic techniques, lyrics from a
song, lines from a movie... keep them together in a scrap book or
journal to monitor /document your design process and journey of
discovery.
Attend the provincial heats.
Just come along, meet lots of people, have a good time and we'll
take it from there &
Get through to the All Island Final. (Well
who knows?!) Top
